Tony, a civil engineer, has spent his whole career in the water industry with extensive experience in planning, design and construction roles as well as key roles in strategic planning. As a strategic planner he has been involved in major utility reforms including water authority mergers, corporatisation, independent price regulation, and contracting out.
Tony joined Yarra Valley Water Ltd at its inception in 1995. Tony held four General Manager positions covering engineering, billing, marketing and business strategy before he was appointed Managing Director in January 2003. YVW provides water and sanitation services to 1.7 million people in Melbourne’s eastern and northern suburbs, has a turnover of close to $1B pa and returns annual dividends to its sole shareholder the State Government of Victoria. Yarra Valley Water is one of the lowest cost water Utilities in Australia, has achieved a global reputation for its work on the environment, is recognised as having a high performing work place culture and a national reputation for its commitment to customer service and treatment of customers experiencing hardship. YVW was recently included in Business Review Weekly’s top 50 most innovative Australian companies.
Since leaving Yarra Valley Water in mid 2014, Tony is operating as a consultant advising water utilities in the developing and developed world. He is Chair of the savewater Alliance, a not for profit alliance promoting water conservation and other services to its members which are mainly urban water Utilities. Tony recently completed a 10 year term as Chair of WaterAid Australia, and 6 years as a Director of WaterAid International. WaterAid is an international charity that aims to provide clean, safe drinking water and sanitation services to the world’s poorest people.
