The Water Calculus in Central Asia

Central Asia is not the first place in the world where irrigated agriculture is wasteful. But it is certainly one that is more prone to the collapse of its water economy if water-intensive crops continue to be grown in a predominantly semi-arid region. To grow cotton and wheat less efficiently than China does, and then export 80% of the output to China, is the kind of senseless trade in virtual water that governments need to wake up to.
