India’s ‘Smart Cities’ Not So Smart After All

The Indian government’s $30 billion program to develop 100 smart cities and rejuvenate another 500 seems to be making no headway. All of India’s urban centers suffer from extreme water shortage (intermittent supply everywhere), inadequate drainage and flood control infrastructure, and appalling public health conditions brought about by untreated sewage, and uncollected solid waste. Clearly, basic services are at a discount and unless these are addressed the ‘smart’ concept will remain just that - a concept.
