Hasin Jahan

  • Ms. Hasin Jahan is a development professional with specialised work experience in the ‘Water Supply & Sanitation’ sector. She has been working in the senior management position for the last ten years. She joined as the Country Director of Practical Action Bangladesh in June 2015. She has proven experience in managing large scale water and sanitation projects, targeting the poor and vulnerable population in the geographically and technically challenged contexts of Bangladesh. Her experience in sanitation interventions including, designing and implementing a project on public toilets in Dhaka city is remarkable. Ms. Jahan works with different development and corporate partners including the ministries and the departments of the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and the city corporations/municipalities. She has proven track record in efficiently managing large funds and different kinds of partnerships.


  • Her presence in the media, national level events, dialogues and active involvement in policy advocacy is distinguished. Ms. Jahan was one of the speakers at the TEDxBUET in October 2016, where she talked about faecal sludge management. She moderated 26 episodes of the development talk show titled 'Jolkotha' for a TV channel - Desh TV. She has also organised events such as national conventions on rainwater harvesting, photo exhibitions featuring stories of grass roots peoples' life, expo on water and sanitation technologies and approaches, short-film festival on ‘Water for Life’ etc. Under her supervision, Practical Action developed a TV drama on faecal sludge management titled, ‘Babu, The Famous Bhai’.


  • Ms. Jahan successfully implemented a number of challenging pilot schemes and mainstreamed those in WaterAid’s programme. Examples include, addressing persons with disabilities, water safety plan, menstrual hygiene management etc. She designed a project on public toilets in Dhaka city, implemented a number of public toilets and introduced different management models to make it work


  • Ms. Hasin Jahan remained active in integrating programme and policy work at different levels. The advocacy initiatives include inclusion of water and sanitation into the 7th five year plan of GoB, ensuring accessibility of the persons with disabilities, promoting faecal sludge management (FSM) through creating evidence of a full FSM chain development at municipality, breaking the silence around menstrual hygiene management and creating an enabling environment for girls and women at large. She provided input during the draft stage of Water Act and continues work to make it operational where the challenge was to make public toilets work in Dhaka city by devising a new management model.


  • One of her most successful projects was the addition of the topic ‘Rainwater Harvesting’ in the polytechnic institutes and several engineering university curricula. The continuous efforts, together with other allies, resulted in inclusion of a separate chapter on the particular topic to the latest Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC)


  • Ms. Jahan explored CSR funding from Robi Axiata, the nationally reputed telecoms. Company, for providing safe drinking water to the passengers and floating population of eight major railway stations in the country.
