Medan Launches Sanitation Promotion Campaign

Date:
2009, August

On August 17, 2009, the city of Medan formally launched its sanitation promotion campaign, which aims to increase resident connections to the city’s newly constructed sewerage network.  The event coincided with Indonesian Independence Day celebrations and attracted hundreds of residents.  City workers distributed sanitation booklets to residents, quizzed the audience on the benefits of a sewer connection, and awarded prizes such as educational t-shirts to enthusiastic winners.  Through the WaterLinks twinning program the Malaysian company Indah Water Konsortium trained PDAM Tirtanadi and Medan city agencies on applying the USAID ECO-Asia 10-Step Water and Sanitation Promotion Toolkit and sent two representatives to oversee the event.
