The Development Congress series aims to set the practice and research agenda for water and sanitation services in developing countries and has a strong focus on 'what works' and on projects that have potential for large-scale delivery in a development setting.

The 1st IWA Development Congress was held in Mexico City, Mexico in November 2009 and the 2nd Development Congress will be held in 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. The programme will cover these themse related to delivering water and sanitation services in low- and middle- income countries:

  • smart technological solutions
  • financing options and opportunities
  • sustaining investments in infrastructure
  • innovative capacity strengthening mechanisms
  • community engagement and planning processes

The Association is expecting 800 delegates from the water and sanitation sector in low- and middle-income countries to attend the congress. As well as academics and practitioners, there will be NGOs, governments, international organisations and financiers represented. Through the active participation of the Malaysian Water Association and working with the IWA regional hub in East Asia, IWA is anticipating strong attendance from Malaysia, the region and beyond.
